Affine Lie–Poisson reduction, Yang–Mills magnetohydrodynamics, and superfluids
This paper develops the theory of affine Lie–Poisson reduction and applies this process to Yang–Mills and Hall magnetohydrodynamics for fluids and superfluids. As a consequence of this approach, the associated Poisson brackets are obtained by reduction of a canonical cotangent bundle. A Kelvin–Noether circulation theorem is presented and is applied to these examples. PACS numbers: 02.20.Sv, 47....

where ρ is the mass density, S is the entropy density, and p is the pressure. It was shown in Morrison and Greene [1980] that this system, as well as its magnetohydrodynamic extension, admit a noncanonical Poisson formulation, that is, equation (1.1) can be written as ḟ = {f, h}, relative to a Hamiltonian function h. The study of the relativistic case was initiated in Bia lynicki-Birula, Hubbar...
متن کاملQuasiparticle scattering by quantum phase slips in one-dimensional superfluids.
Quantum phase slips (QPS) in narrow superfluid channels generate momentum by unwinding the supercurrent. In a uniform Bose gas, this momentum needs to be absorbed by quasiparticles (phonons). We show that this requirement results in an additional exponential suppression of the QPS rate (compared to the rate of QPS induced by a sharply localized perturbation). In BCS-paired fluids, momentum can ...
متن کاملRealizing one-dimensional topological superfluids with ultracold atomic gases
We propose an experimental implementation of a topological superfluid with ultracold fermionic atoms. An optical superlattice is used to juxtapose a 1D gas of fermionic atoms and a 2D conventional superfluid of condensed Feshbach molecules. The latter acts as a Cooper pair reservoir and effectively induces a superfluid gap in the 1D system. Combined with a spin-dependent optical lattice along t...
متن کاملFractional excitation in one-dimensional two species fermionic superfluids
We study one-dimensional two-species fermionic superfluids with order parameter twisted by an angle φ at the two ends. By solving the corresponding Bogoliubov-de-Gennes equation, we obtain the U(1) soliton state which turns out to carry φS/(2π) spin, where S is the spin of single fermion. For Z2 soliton with φ = π, the localized state carries only 1/2 of a single fermion spin. To conserve the t...
